Environmentally Aware Snowbirds

We know that it is cheaper to drive your car from Massachusetts to Florida every year, just like it is cheaper to wash your car vs. having it professionally done.  However, year after year, many customers choose to be environmentally aware and hire a car transport company to do the move for them.  More and more, people are becoming aware of the environment and the effects their driving has to it.  For many of our snow birds, they understand that by using an auto transport company they are reducing their carbon footprint and helping to leave behind a healthy planet for their family, similar to what they experienced in their youth.  We commend those individuals who care enough about the environment to use this service.

Shipping Modified Vehicles

The two most common modifications that affect auto shipping is when a vehicle is lifted with larger tires or lowered to be under 3 inches off the ground. For lifted vehicles, which tend to be trucks, there are two main points the causes issues when you are coordinating their auto transport. First is the height, the tallest a car transporter can be in most states is 13ft 6inches. The extra 6 inch lift on the truck along with the larger tires making it a foot taller or more in some cases, poses a problem. The second issue to focus on is the extra width of the truck that is created by the the larger tires. Some trailers aren’t equipped to handle wheels that wide. Therefore, with units like these normally transported on 3 car trailers which handles both of those concerns. However, there are fewer of these auto haulers on the road, which can sometimes cause delays in getting the vehicles picked up when you want. As for the lowered vehicles, the easiest way to handle that is to ensure there are boards available for the driver so that he can cut the angle at which it is driven onto the trailer. This is something to keep in mind as not all trucks will have boards on their trailer.

Insurance Coverage

A huge question that is often asked by people calling is, “How much does your insurance cover if my car is damaged?” While it is not very common to have damages during car transport, they do occur. Typically on minor incidents like dings or things of that nature we recommend you do a ballpark with the driver right there and settle it and then at your own convenience have a body shop pop it out. If it is major damage then the carrier’s insurance would handle it the same as any insurance company. If the car is totaled they will give you the value as determined by how insurance companies determine value. Again, because these transport trucks are so large it is pretty uncommon for incidents such as this to occur, but it is good to know when you are planning to arrange for any type of auto transport.

Snowbird Auto Shipping

There are two snow bird seasons every year, one during the winter when the majority of people are leaving the Northeast and arrange for Florida auto transport; the other season in spring when everyone is escaping the soon sweltering heat of Florida.  During these times of years the rates will be different north and south along the east coast than any other time of the year.  If you are moving your vehicle in the direction of all the snow birds, your rates will always be more expensive.  This is simply a matter of supply and demand.  However, you can use this flux of directional auto shipping to your advantage.  For example, if you have a car in Florida that you need brought to Massachusetts and you are not in a rush, you can wait for the winter.  Since the majority of the trailers will be going south full, they will have empty spots going north.  This being the case you can take advantage of it and get a rate $100-200 less than you would pay in other times of the year.

Motorcycle Transport

Motorcycle shipping can be handled a few different ways.  The two obvious options are if you want to transport the motorcycle on an enclosed trailer or an open trailer.  We always advise our customers to transport any motorcycle on an enclosed trailer for several reasons.  Our two biggest concerns are damage from road debris and theft.  On an open trailer motorcycles are strapped down in a similar fashion as on an enclosed trailer, the main difference being, everyone can see it.  To remove these straps and steal the bike isn’t likely, but we feel it isn’t worth the risk to save a few hundred dollars.  Most people are very finicky about how clean their bike is kept, and that is another advantage of enclosed transport.  When you ship it on an enclosed trailer it will come as clean as it was when you gave it to us.  On enclosed transport, you can have the motorcycle crated, as is required by some carriers, or just strapped down.  Both are safe options as both kinds of carriers are prepared to properly handle how they move the cargo.

Exporting cars

The two most common methods used when exporting a car are roll-on / roll-off and enclosed containers.  As of recent, the demand for auto shipping to export cars has been on the rise compared to recent years in the past.  To give you an idea of what a roll-on/roll-off ship is like, imagine a huge floating parking garage but much tighter parking spots and streets.  The cars are driven into the ship and strapped down to the ground and when the ship arrive to the port they are driven right off.  After clearing customs, the cars are ready to be delivered.  Often this is a more economical choice compared to containerized auto transport. In that method the cars are driven into a 20 or 40 foot container and strapped down inside the container at a loading facility.  The containers are then driven to the port and loaded via crane onto the cargo ship.  This same process is then done in order to get the vehicle off the ship.  You can see why it typically is more expensive considering the additional steps needed in order to accept and deliver the automobile.

Car transport options

Being that there are a large variety of vehicles on the road, there has to be a large variety of car transporters on the road as well to handle them.  Rarely will there be any car or vehicle that can’t be moved by a carrier.  In some instances, it would be more cost effective to drive the vehicle, and this is often the case when you have a large or oversized vehicle and it needs to be transported a short distance.  A short distance can be Los Angeles to San Diego or San Francisco.  This isn’t necessarily the case for a regular cars, but typically large vehicles require special trailers and can make the price of transport unreasonable when factoring in the vehicle can be driven for a fraction of the price.  An important fact to consider when you call a company looking for car transport is that sometimes after they deliver your vehicle, they will have to drive several hundred miles to pickup the next unit.  This is sometimes not considered by customers when they are getting a quote.
